With summer just around the corner, many of us are looking forward to long, lazy days in the sun and maybe even a holiday. The good news is, the wait is over! The cast of brand-new musical Club Tropicana are bringing summer to you when they touch down in Venue Cymru between 24-29 June.
An all-star cast is headed up by pop sensation Joe McElderry, who shot to fame as the winner of ITV’s X Factor in 2009. Since then Joe’s forged an impressive career, enjoying success both in the charts and on the stage.
Yes Mag’s Carly caught up with him to find out how Club Tropicana went from idea to reality and what life’s been like since X Factor for the sweet-voiced heart-throb.
Carly: Club Tropicana The Musical looks so much fun, are you having the time of your life?
Joe: Do you know what? It is so much fun, we are literally having a party on stage every night!
We created this from scratch back in January but we didn’t know how people would react to it. We didn’t know if they were going to love it or hate it but, right now, audiences are lapping it up and that’s really special for us.
Carly: Tell me about the musical and your character, Gary.
Joe: Gary is the flamboyant entertainments manager at Club Tropicana. We’re under the impression we’re getting inspected and Gary’s job is to brush everything under the carpet and make the hotel look more glamorous than actually it is.
He and his trusty maid, Consuela, come up with the idea to dress her up in lots of outrageous costumes and pretend she’s a guest to make the hotel look more busy than it is!
While all that’s going on we have our couples who’ve left each other at the altar and jetted off on holiday with their friends. Unbeknown to them, they’ve checked into the same hotel! It all goes wrong at one of Gary’s entertainment nights when they bump into each other!
Carly: You’re still very young, did you ease into a role with 80s music quite easily?
Joe: The great thing about the show is, even if you weren’t part of the 80s, you’ll know the songs. I already knew all the songs in the show because they’ve really stood the test of time.
We do a huge mega-mix at the end and the whole audience get up and sing and clap along – it’s like a concert!
Carly: It’s not your first appearance in musical theatre, how does this differ to other roles you’ve played?
Joe: This is the first time I’ve played comedy and it’s been really nerve wracking; I’ve never done anything like this before.
Coming from a pop background, I’ve been used to having an instant reaction from the audience and what’s really nice about playing comedy is you get that instant reaction but every night’s different.
Carly: You’ve had a phenomenal career but many reality show stars disappear after their first single or album. What does it take to be successful and stay at the top?
Joe: If you knew the answer to that you could probably make a fortune! It’s a combination of many things. Firstly, I never take ‘no’ for an answer and, secondly, I work really hard. I’ve always stuck my head down and worked hard and it’s paid off.
I’ve never been afraid to step out the box when I’ve been offered things either. Even if it’s a bit of a challenge, I like to pick things that are fresh and different.
Carly: What’s been your career highlight to date?
Joe: Popstar to Operastar opened up a whole new genre of music to me…The jump was an amazing experience…Joseph was my big musical theatre debut…Club Tropicana, as well. I’ve never been part of a brand-new musical; putting it together from scratch, that’s a real highlight too.
Carly: So, what’s next for Joe?
Joe: I’m working on new material at the moment but it’s on hold while I do Club Tropicana. I’ll definitely be doing some more solo material but if a role comes along that I feel I can explore and have fun with I’ll give it a go.
