Whether you’re trying to lose weight, improve cardiovascular fitness or get stronger, many people claim the most challenging hurdle is committing to a sustainable and effective routine to achieve their goals.
But did you know you can improve your chances of success by doing certain exercises at specific times in the day? Here’s our guide to the best times to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle…
Best time to… run
In general, the best time to run for weight loss is at a time to suit you, as running requires more devotion than any other exercise! After all, you need to stay consistent to see results.
Results have found that running before breakfast can lead to an additional 20% fat loss, and a much greater improvement in blood pressure levels. So it seems that mornings, much as we’d like to stay in bed, are the best option!
Best time to… weight lift
Mornings are best for building muscle due to increased mental focus and mind-muscle connection.
Afternoons are best for personal records, because your pain threshold is at is highest so you can really push yourself.
Evenings are best for heavy lifts such as deadlifts, squats and bench presses, as your body is peak condition.
Afternoons have the best balance of benefits, but it can be tricky to factor an afternoon workout into your routine if you have work or school runs to contend with.
Best time to… eat
It’s best to eat a meal or small snack every four hours to fuel your metabolism and prevent binge eating.
We recommend eating your three main meals at 07:00, 13:00 and 19:00, with snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Don’t eat anything after 20:00, this will allow your body to sleep more restfully, and be sure to drink plenty of water. You’ll be much less inclined to snack on unhealthy foods if you keep your body fueled.
Best time to… sleep
Everyone’s different, but when undertaking a rigorous fitness routine, you need more sleep than usual, with a minimum of seven hours a night. Nine hours is the optimum amount of sleep, so make sure you’re getting plenty of rest so you have the energy to create a better you!
